Touring Richmond VA – A legacy of the two countries

Tourism in the capital of Virginia is a rare pleasure’ Richmond, the state of the fifth largest city, is a real gem’ Has links with the war, and the Confederation of capital’ The city to maintain an atmosphere of old South into a modern center of business and finance’

The ideal place to start your visit is the Church of San Juan’ This National Historic Landmark was built in 1741′ As the first church in Richmond, is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the state’ A son of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech in 1775′ Notable Virginians are buried in the cemetery near Hollywood’

Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his family lived in the south of the White House (c’ 1818)’ Columns of the house, recently renovated, the rooms are open to the public’ It is the first object of the Confederation and a National Historic Landmark’ It is also very similar to Mt Vernon authenticity’

Old Town Hall, built in Victorian Gothic style in 1894, is nearby’ Each piece of the tower is unique’ As part of its 3-foot granite walls, an inner courtyard of the painted iron increases over three floors’

Iron was one of the first industries in Richmond’ Foundries of the city with a good growth of the railways, and weapons and ammunition for the Confederate army’ The most famous was the casting of Tredegar Iron Works, built in 1833′ Tredegar Iron Blade for the CSS Virginia – the former USS Merrimac’

Tredegar is now home to the American Civil War Center, which opened in 2006′ More than a museum, is a diary of the civil war told through the stories of those who fought – north, south, and slaves’ The Center on how the documents affected by the war to the nation before, during and after conflict’ An old steam engine, used to transport ore to the smelter, is out’

The Richmond Battlefield National Park Visitors Center is also located in Tredegar’ Eighteen national historic sites near strong fields, a naval battle site, an ancient land, and a prison camp’ There is also a visitors’ center of Chimborazo, the southern part of the largest military hospital’

Canal Walk is a little over a mile from the historic Tredegar unit Shockoe Slip’ George Washington a proposal to circumvent the channels of the James River rapids’ Maps, signs and bronze markers to explain the history as you walk’ A pedestrian bridge near the Cross in Tredegar Belle Isle, a rocky island’ During the Civil War, Belle Isle is a military prison’ Equipped to deal with 3000, there were over 10,000 prisoners in 1863′

Shockoe Slip in Richmond Old is a blend of coffee, micro, galleries, shops and one of the oldest farmers markets in the country’ Fairs were held here since the 1740’s’ Shop outdoor market from Thursday to Sunday morning’

A favorite of residents and tourists is the companion to snuff, a first class restaurant in a former warehouse snuff’ TTC is an elegant Victorian experience: three floors with a lift of time, the white linen, and a cigarette girl in 1920′ Do not miss it!

We must also see Agecroft Hall’ A genuine Tudor mansion, Agecroft was built in England in the 1400’s’ He moved to Richmond stone by stone in the 1920s’ The furniture dates from the late 1500 until mid-1600′ (Think of the Queen Mary and James I’) Twenty-three acres of gardens and lawns surrounding the hotel’

Maymont is another impressive mansion’ Built in 1893 during the era of Newport and Biltmore Estate, was in financial house, James Dooley and his wife’ As the famous Hershey’s, had no children of Dooley’ When James wife, Sallie, died in 1925, the estate was bequeathed to the city’ Most furnishings are original’ The gardens are outstanding! Maymont is the only type of car that is not changed by the residents’ Also at the Maymont Nature and Visitor Center Robbins’ See the collection of cars’ Virginia, native wildlife can be seen in the Nature Center’

Tour historic homes of other Valentine Richmond History Center’ Wickham House was built in 1812′ John Wickham Aaron Burr was the defense’ The house is beautiful, with a separate spiral staircase in the lobby’ Also at the Center of the Supreme Court John Marshall of the house (Marshall President Burr was justice in the trial), the Black History Museum, Edward Valentine and study, a sculptor note’
